Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important and growing health problem for all countries. This chronic condition results in changes in the pattern of use of health services and in an increase in expenses, considering the need for technological incorporation for them. Health system solutions can favor the development of unfavorable health conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy. Therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze the social profile and use of health services by people with diabetic retinopathy and its relationship with social development. This is a descriptive type of analysis study. Data, from a secondary source, were collected at the Ophthalmological Center of a medium-sized city in São Paulo. The study population consists of patients diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy and who obtained assistance in a specialized retinal service in the year 2020. Data were analyzed by description techniques. Thirty-three people with diabetic retinopathy participated in this study, with a mean age of 63.5 years; 69.7% (23) were female; 87.9% (29) were white; 60.6% (20) had a diagnosis of diabetes between 10 and 15 years, 21.2% (7) had a diagnosis of diabetes more than 15 years; 69.7% (23) were treated with insulin; 63.6% (21) adhered to the treatment according to medical advice; 84.8% (28) were not absent during scheduled appointments; 96.9% (32) needed to follow the emergency services related to the occurrence of hyperglycemia, 84.9% did not occur with an endocrinologist and 91% did not have a peak with a nutritionist. Faced with these chronicles, it is identified that they are common public policies of sanitary retinopathy for the care of the person with a community.
